Facebook Social Energy App

October 22, 2011 by Marie Gizelle 1 Comment

The Energy software startup Opower partnered with Facebook and the environmentalists at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) with a plan to launch a Facebook social energy application next year. The app will enable users to check out their energy usage compared to friends and national averages and get other energy efficiency tips. Brilliant! This is how the power of social networking should be used. Most Facebook apps were and are used for good whether you agree or not — one is to make users engaged, let the app go viral, and in the process affect user behavior- for the better! So if users are to participate in this, they'd perhaps be more responsible in using electricity, affecting ...

Here’s to the Crazy ones

October 18, 2011 by Marie Gizelle Leave a Comment

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward. Maybe they have to be crazy. How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels? We make tools for ...

What Programming Language Should You Choose?

What Programming Language Should You Choose?

One of my former students asked me what is the most in-demand programming language now, for he wants to study it. He said, he wants to get a job easily after he graduated so he wants to study a programming language that will give him a career. I've been with the same dilemma when I was still in college. There are times that I want to be a master in Assembly language, or in C, or in Delphi, or in VB, or in Java or Python. In most of the times, I always want to learn Java. So, I studied it and show interest of learning it. I even attended a month-long training about Java programming. But guess what, I just learned the basics, and nothing more than that. ...

Exploring Prague With Kids : 9 Best Things To See and Do

Prancing in Prague

Eight years ago, one of my closest friend and I agreed to have a rendezvous in Prague. She was there for 5 days and since Vienna is just 5 hours away by train, I thought of meeting her there. Unfortunately, her trip fell on the month when I've just given birth to our second son. I wasn't able to see her... So for this visit, I had been thinking of what might have Prague been during her visit. The city is charming, that's given. Architecture-wise, it has a feel of Vienna - having been an important city for the Habsburgs during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The city obviously also has a touch of Rome - having been once the capital of the Roman empire, the influences are obvious. Yet, it still ...

Goodbye Steve…

October 6, 2011 by Marie Gizelle Leave a Comment

I woke up at the sound of my iPhone's alarm, 4:30 a.m. - I had to wake up hubby as he had to catch a 6:30 flight to LA. So he stood up and took a bath while I checked my email and opened another browser for Facebook and the first thing I read was Steve is dead (at 56 for complications of Pancreatic cancer). I had to tell hubby right after him coming out of the bathroom. We were saddened, why, we love what the guy did for us, techie kids and our techie kids! And he just had to die on the day that hubby gets a step closer to where he is. Tsktsk. If you've watched Pirates of Silicon Valley you'll have an idea how Steve developed his ideas for the Macintosh...how artistic the guy is and has ...

Array: Ouch No More Tip

September 26, 2011 by Marie Gizelle 6 Comments

I remember, when I was still in college, coding is not that hard. That was when I still haven't met Array. Arrays really cause "aray" for most. And you knew that too. Isn't it? Now, I would like to share some tips on how to make array manipulation easy for you. Believe it or not, I just realized it when I started working as a programmer. What Is An Array? From www.cplusplus.com An array is a series of elements of the same type placed in contiguous memory locations that can be individually referenced by adding an index to a unique identifier. ...
